Realistic school shooting drill in Poway

Posted: Updated:

POWAY (CBS 8 ) - High drama Monday on the campus of a high school in Poway but it was all just a drill.

Sheriff's personnel, firefighters and school staffers took part in a three and a half hour drill Monday simulating a campus shooting.

Sheriffs deputies are responding to Abraxas High School in Poway to take down a gunman shooting students with a semi automatic.

The gun fire sounds real, teen volunteers look like injured students, firefighter paramedics seem to be tending to victims, and deputies appear to be evacuating classrooms.

But it's all fake.

The drill is the first of its kind in the Poway Unified School District to prepare school staff in the event of a real school shooting.

San Diego County is not immune to school shootings. The school shooting at Santana High School, in Santee and Granite Hills high in El Cajon both happened in 2001.

But most recently on teacher's minds is Sandy Hook.

Teachers and principals from schools in the Poway district came out to Abraxas for this active shooter training.

They say this training will help him be more calm, collect and rational in an emergency situation.

The school district says it wants to hold more of these simulated exercises in the future.

Classes were not affected by the exercise because students were dismissed early. Also, prior to the exercise, flyers were distributed in the area to inform the public of the training.
