Local attorneys appointed to Superior Court bench

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Two prominent local attorneys are moving behind the bench. Patricia Guerrero and Michael Popkins have been appointed as new Superior Court judges.

Guerrero, 41, has served as a partner at Latham and Watkins LLP since 2007, where she was an associate from 1997 to 2001 and 2003 to 2006. She worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the Southern District of California, U.S. Attorney's Office from 2002 to 2003.

Guerrero, a Democrat, earned a law degree from Stanford Law School and a Bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley. She fills a vacancy created by the president's appointment of Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel to the federal bench.

Each position pays $178,789 annually.

Popkins, 62, has been a San Diego County deputy public defender since 1985 and was a deputy public defender in Los Angeles County from 1978 to 1985. He has been an adjunct professor at the California Western School of Law since 2009.

Popkins, also a Democrat, earned a law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and a Bachelor's degree from Villanova University. He fills a vacancy created Nov. 12 when court officials converted a commissioner position to a judgeship.
