Horses found running loose on SR 78 in Ramona

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Animal control is taking a hard look at a Ramona horse breeder, after 10 horses were found running loose on Highway 78.

The California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire had to round up the horses on Monday after they escaped from their pens about a mile and a half west of Old Julian Highway.

Officers say the horses' hooves were splitting and some of them looked skinny.

"When our animal control officers got out, Cal Fire told them there was no water and no feed at that time for the horses either," said Dan DeSousa with County Animal Control

Officers say the owner of the horses is Lori Patton, who is currently moving the animals off the property.

No citation was issued, but officers will be inspecting the horses on Saturday.
