New lifeguard statue dedicated in Ocean Beach

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A six foot tall bronze lifeguard memorial was dedicated in Ocean Beach Thursday afternoon.

The sculpture, by local artist Richard Arnold, honors San Diego lifeguards and 13 swimmers who drowned in strong rip currents in May 1918.

Those drownings prompted the city to increase staffing and add equipment to the lifeguard service.

"It's an important civic event to understand what happened and that every lifeguard on our beaches today is here because of tragic drownings over the last 100 years," said Former SD City Councilman Byron Wear

Officials say the memorial is the first part of a larger renovation program at Ocean Beach, including a veteran's wall and enhanced coastal access.
