SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Flames broke out in an apartment above several businesses in Mountain View early Wednesday morning, leaving three women homeless.

The San Diego Fire Department responded to a commercial building on Ocean View Boulevard around 12:36 a.m. after reports of a fire in a second story building. About 40 firefighters arrived on the scene and were able to extinguish the flames out in about 15 minutes.

A family was inside the burning apartment, but they were able to escape.

"My sister woke me up. We don't even have a fire alarm. All I could get was my dog," said resident Aurelia Tantoja.

No injuries have been reported. Damage to the apartment was estimated at $325,000 and damage to the surrounding property stands at $100,000, according to a San Diego fire-rescue dispatcher.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
