Inaugural Pedal the Cause bike ride coming to San Diego

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - There's a brand new movement coming to San Diego to fight cancer. It's called Pedal the Cause, a bike ride and fundraising event. News 8 is proud to be the event media sponsor. Now's the time to get on your bike and start training.

Pedal the Cause has raised money for cancer research for years. In October, the inaugural Pedal the Cause bike ride is coming to San Diego.

"There'll be a one-day course of 25 miles and 50 miles, and there'll be an epic weekend course," Pedal the Cause Executive Director Patrick Connor said.

The two-day ride starts and ends at UCSD and goes all the way into Julian, where riders sleep over on Saturday night.

"We've selected the route between La Jolla and Julian because its some of the most beautiful riding San Diego county," Connor said.

And speaking of beautiful, Cookie "Chainsaw" Randolph from the DSC will be riding along with radio host Mike Slater, and even the KFMB general manager.

The "pedal the cause" executive director is himself a cancer survivor and five time Iron Man participant.

"Having gone through cancer when I was competing in my third, fourth, and fifth Iron Man, I firmly locked in my DNA the idea of cancer and endurance sports," Connor said.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event stay in San Diego to benefit cancer research at the Salk Institute, the Sanford-Burnham Institute and the UCSD Moores Cancer Center.

"Since the sequencing of the human genome, and what's happened after that, we now can dig very deep into what makes cancers tick," UCSD Moores Cancer Center Director Dr. Scott Lippman said.

Genetic testing of cancer tumors is leading to incredible new treatments, but funding is essential, Lippman said.

"The problem is, the federal budget is getting so low that even these successful labs are having trouble developing treatments to the patients," he said.

If you register for Pedal the Cause by Wednesday, you get a discount on the minimum fundraising goal to participate.

This Wednesday is One More Rider Day, where registered riders are encouraged to sign up new riders.
