SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Authorities Monday identified a person of interest being sought for fleeing the scene of a crash on Interstate 5, abandoning a seriously injured toddler who was inside the vehicle.

The crash on southbound Interstate 5 near the Rosecrans Street underpass occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses say they heard the crash and saw a black 2004 Nissan Titan truck rolling down a hill. According to the CHP, the vehicle then struck a palm tree before coming to rest on top of a concrete retaining wall.

During the driver's attempts to free the infant from the vehicle, he released the boy from his car seat, causing him to fall about 10 feet from the wrecked vehicle, the CHP reported.

The boy is believed to be about four years old. Paramedics took him to Rady Children's Hospital with severe head trauma, according to broadcast reports.

Authorities identified the person of interest as Angelo Fabiani Arroyo. Police and CHP units searched for Arroyo but were not able to locate him. The search was discontinued after about three hours.
