Work continues to repair broken water main

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Crews worked overnight trying to repair a large water main break that flooded streets and homes in University Heights.

The water main break which flooded a University Heights neighborhood Monday evening was expected to be repaired by Tuesday morning.

The broken pipeline began inundating the 2800 block of Madison Avenue about 5:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

According to city water officials, a 12-inch concrete main ruptured along Madison, sending thousands of gallons into the street and into the yards of surrounding homes.

I'm pretty distressed. (The water) is completely under my house," said local resident Joy Goodalle. "Water in that amount damages the structure under that holds your house up."

Monday night, dozens of homes were without water service, which city officials said should be restored by 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The cause of the water main break remains under investigation.
