Local firefighters use training exercises to prepare for the worst

CHULA VISTA  (CBS8) - Local fire agencies gathered in southeast Chula Vista Thursday to take part in valuable training exercises to help prepare to battle wildfires.

Chula Vista, National City and San Diego's fire departments came together for these critical drills, practicing how to properly set fires using an accelerant, in order to create defensible space and stop an out of control wildfire before it has a chance to spread.

"This has given us another tool in our tool box," said Chula Vista Battalion Chief Robert Nelson, " to put down fire to create defensible space in a controlled manner that will help us save homes."

Firefighters also took careful calculations of air temperatures, wind speeds and relative humidity levels, which are also critical in strategically battling these blazes.

Training exercises like the ones carried out Thursday also help make sure different firefighting agencies, at all levels, are on the same page.

"It builds a bond between us," Nelson added. "We know how the other operates out in the field, so it really helps out."

With fuel moisture levels at alarmingly low levels throughout San Diego county right now, firefighters said they are gearing up for the worst."

"You're seeing a lot more fire activity here in Southern California," Nelson said. "Right now we're preparing for the future fires that will probably be coming."
