Mt. Soledad cross could get federal protection

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - For decades a legal battle has been fought over the cross that stands on top of Mount Soledad.

Now, could the controversial cross on top of Mount Soledad soon be getting federal protection?

According to U-T San Diego, a provision in the 2014 Defense Authorization Act was added by local republican congressman Duncan D. Hunter.

It contains language that would protect religious symbols on government land.

Hunter's amendment is expected to be approved when the full bill goes up for a final vote in the house Friday.
