SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - For several San Diego State Students summer break can't come fast enough.

Their off-campus apartment is infested with bed bugs and the students say the apartment manager is demanding they pay for the problem.

Danielle Thayer says she and her roommates had to throw away most of their furniture, because the bugs were everywhere.

She showed News 8 pictures of bites all over her body.

The lease on the apartment is up Friday but before they move out, the apartment manager left a notice saying they have to pay hundreds of dollars for extermination and inspections.

Thayer's mom says the kids are being taken advantage of.

Thayer says the bed bugs were there before she moved in. She and her mother plan to take the landlord to small claims court.

News 8 spoke to the tenants legal center about this issue.

They told us a landlord has to prove the tenants created the beg bug problem and they can't legally deduct the extermination fee from the tenant's deposit without that proof.

Some of the footage used in this video story was shot with a GoPro camera.
