Driver swerves to avoid squirrel, crashes into bay

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A driver trying to avoid running over a squirrel on Fiesta Island ended up driving his BMW sedan into Mission Bay.

It happened just before 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

San Diego lifeguards say the driver of this BMW lost control, and ended up in the water.

Because the car was stuck in the muck, lifeguard Chris Ingalls had to dive into the bay wearing a snorkel to attach the tow chain, so the BMW could be dragged out.

"I've done this quite a bit. Sometimes, the car is not as submerged as this one is in the muck, and it's a little easier to just wrap the chain on it. This is a nice BMW. But it's gonna be totaled. It's a shame."

Fortunately, the driver of the car and his passenger were not hurt in the crash.
