CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A preliminary hearing was postponed Wednesday to Sept. 17 for a man accused of killing his girlfriend in her National City home in 2005, then fleeing to Mexico where he remained a fugitive until this year.

Victor Hugo Sanchez, 47, was brought back to San Diego March 2 and booked into jail on a murder charge. He remains held without bail in connection with the death of 36-year-old Agapita Gonzalez.

Sanchez faces 55 years to life in prison if convicted.

On Oct. 24, 2005, the victim's family found her body bearing signs of trauma in her apartment on East 16th Street west of Highland Avenue. They said they hadn't been able to reach her for two days, according to police.

Soon after the body was discovered, investigators learned that Sanchez had fled to Mexico, and an arrest warrant was issued. The motive was unclear.

On March 1, Mexican authorities notified their American counterparts that Sanchez had been detained in Cozumel, off the Yucatan Peninsula.
