4 San Diego police won't be charged over DUI crash

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — No criminal charges will be filed against four San Diego police officers who delayed reporting a crash by a drunken detective.

U-T San Diego says the county district attorney's office has decided not to prosecute three police sergeants and a detective who waited hours to report the December crash.

Another detective, Jeffrey Blackford, was off duty when he crashed his undercover police car into a utility box.

Instead of reporting the incident, Blackford called two off-duty friends, who called two colleagues. A formal investigation wasn't launched for two hours.

Blackford pleaded guilty in April to misdemeanor drunken driving. He was sentenced to DUI classes and 25 days of public work service.
