Beer Festival prompts DUI crackdown near fairgrounds

Posted: Updated:

DEL MAR (CBS 8) - Law enforcement is stepping up patrols around the San Diego Fair this weekend to try and deter drunk driving and keep the roads safe.

Agencies from around the county are joining in the effort and will be conducting a zero tolerance saturation patrol.

The crackdown begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will involve the Sheriff's department, along with officers from the Coronado, National City and UC San Diego police departments.

The fair is hosting an International Beer Festival Friday through Sunday where people can pay $55 for unlimited beer samples.

Fair officials say they encourage people to drink responsibly.

"There is no reason to... There's never a reason to drink and drive. And the San Diego County Fair always has alternate ways for people to go to and from the fair," said fair spokesperson Linda Zweig.

The fair is offering great deals for people who want to take the Coaster to and from the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Many fairgoers attending the beer festival have also brought a designated driver, so they don't get behind the wheel.
