Freeway chase ends in crash in North County

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A man is behind bars Saturday after leading local law enforcement on a high-speed chase along Interstate 5 that ended with a crash in the North County.

It all started Saturday morning after a Mira Costa College police officer tried to pull over an SUV for speeding.

The driver sped away and got on Interstate 5 headed north.

"He got on the freeway and he was going 100-plus miles an hour on the freeway. They relinquished the pursuit to CHP. CHP, I guess, got a hold of him and they followed him all the way to this intersection. He came into the gas station here and he crashed into a parked car."

After hitting a parked car, the suspect tried to get back onto I-5 along La Costa Avenue.

That's where he crashed his SUV and ran off.

Authorities set up a perimeter in the area and eventually found the suspect hiding in some bushes along the freeway.

He is facing felony evading and misdemeanor hit-and-run.

If you've ever been stuck sitting in traffic, you've probably seen motorcyclists cutting through lanes and whizzing by. It's a move called lane-splitting, and while it's potentially dangerous, it's perfectly legal.
