Weekend heat wave hitting San Diego County

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego is about to heat up - by the end of the week parts of the county will hit triple digits. Plus, people heading to the local beaches can expect strong rip currents.

The heat wave is set to hit this Friday and Saturday with temperatures along the coast expected to be in the 80's. The East County should see temperatures in the 90's and the desert could reach 120 degrees.

Last week, county representatives held a news conference reminding residents that there are more than 100 Cool Zones across the county where people can stay cool without running their air conditioners.

The program started 13 years ago, when senior citizens were forced to choose between paying for their medicine and paying their soaring electric bills.

For those stopping by a Cool Zone, SDG&E officials say there is a possibility that some people could qualify for assistance with their power bills.

"We will be at the Cool Zones and we will be promoting the different programs that we have to be able to help our customers, such as our Care Program which provides qualifying customers up to a 20 percent discount on their utility bills," explained Frank Urtasun with SDG&E.
