SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Representatives at the County Assessor's Office say the clerk will not be issuing marriage licenses to gay couples at this time.

San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/Clerk Ernest Dronenberg Jr. said the county cannot accept applications for marriage licenses to same-sex couples until the Prop. 8 case is dismissed by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and direction is provided by the state Office of Vital Records. He did not specify how long that might take. However, he said his office will update its website and notify the news media when it begins accepting same-sex marriage license appointments and ceremonies.

The assessor's office reports that they've taken phone calls and turned away a few couples trying to get married as soon as Wednesday.
