Marijuana operation found after explosion, fire at Encanto home

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A fire that broke out following an explosion at an Encanto home Thursday uncovered a marijuana grow operation.

Fire crews were called to the 1900 block of Paradise Street just after 4 p.m.

After putting out the fire, officials found the marijuana grow inside the house. Police say it appears a marijuana oil extraction operation was underway when the fire started.

The fire erupted inside of a refrigerator, according to DEA Special Agent Eileen Zeidler. Authorities think a flammable compound known as Butane may have somehow mixed with alcohol bottles and sparked an explosion.

A 7-year-old boy was on a couch in the adjacent room, according to Zeidler. A wall between he and the kitchen protected him from flying debris and the blast impact.

No one was hurt.

Three men in their 20's were arrested Thursday and charged with four felonies including child endangerment, as well as cultivating, possessing, and manufacturing marijuana.

The property owner, Pete Garcia, tells News 8 the suspects were cited a month ago for discharging weapons and police noticed the marijuana plants inside.

The suspects told Garcia that they had medical marijuana cards; however, the DEA suggested that the approximately 20 plants found on the premises would be more than legally allowed under most circumstances.

The 7-year-old was released to his mother late Thursday night.

The mother is not considered a suspect in the ongoing investigation.
