Friday's high temps may set records as hottest day of the year

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An excessive heat warning takes effect in the mountains and deserts of San Diego Friday, which will be one of the hottest days of the year, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency scheduled the warning from 10 a.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Sunday, saying highs in the deserts will range from 117 to 122 degrees and highs in the mountains will be from 100 to 105 degrees.

Medical experts say there are some important things to keep in mind when temperatures start to rise, especially when it comes to children, the elderly and overweight patients.

They are advising everyone to slow down when it comes to outdoor activity, especially when it comes to working out.

There are three basic levels to heat illness. One is heat sickness where you cramp and experience fatigue. Second is heat exhaustion and third is heat stroke, which can be fatal at times.

"Exceedingly high temperatures can cause heat-related illness or death," the NWS said. "Those working or playing outdoors, and those without air conditioning are most vulnerable."

Elsewhere in the county, highs this weekend are expected to range from the high 70s to low 80s near the coast, high 80s to low 90s inland, mostly in the 90s in the western valleys, and in the mid-90s to 105 near the foothills.

A gradual cooling is expected for most of the county on Monday and Tuesday, but the excessive heat warning may be extended for the deserts into Monday, the weather service said.

The excessive heat warning does not extend into area beaches this weekend. Along the coast, a southerly swell is expected to cause dangerous rip currents and above-normal surf through Saturday evening, especially along south-facing beaches.
