CARMEL VALLEY (CNS) - Police Sunday were investigating what caused a hot air balloon to land last night in the center divider of the State Route 56 freeway.

According to authorities, the balloon lost altitude at about 8:30 p.m. The balloon deflated after landing, according to witnesses on the scene.

SR 56 runs east-west for 9.2 miles from Interstate 5 in Carmel Valley to Interstate 15. The eastern end of the highway is also the western end of the Ted Williams Parkway.

There were no injuries.
