Extra trash collection bins set up at popular beaches

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Big crowds are expected at San Diego beaches this Fourth of July, and the city is preparing to deal with all the extra trash they're expected to leave behind.

The San Diego Clean Beach Coalition Tuesday showed off the temporary trash and recycling collection bins that will be set up at popular beaches on the fourth and other busy summer weekends.

Councilman Kevin Faulconer says the goal is to keep beaches and bays looking as clean after the holiday as they were before.

"It makes a huge difference. Our beaches are much cleaner and people get it. They know not only to put their trash in the trash, the recyclables in the recycle, I think there's a heightened awareness," Faulconer said.

The bins collected more than 25,000 pounds of trash during the Memorial Day weekend.
