SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The family of a Tierrasanta woman killed allegedly by her own son is speaking out for the first time.

"This has been a terrible time for all of us because we have lost a mom that has loved us unconditionally for our entire lives. What makes this tragedy harder for us is that it looks like our brother Dale was responsible for this terrible event," Joan Robinson's daughter Jodi Osborn said.

Eighty-year-old Joan Robinson was found dead inside her home on Tuesday. Police say her 55-year-old son Dale Robinson is the prime suspect. Dale Robinson has a long criminal past and his family says he is mentally ill.

"Dale Robinson, our brother, as some of you know, has had mental illness issues for most of his life. If anything good could be taken from this tragedy it is to make people aware that there is no real safety net for people like this," Osborn said.

Dale Robinson remains hospitalized under armed guard with injuries suffered in a crash following the murder. He has not yet been charged.

A celebration of life will be held for Joan Robinson on August 2.

If you've ever been stuck sitting in traffic, you've probably seen motorcyclists cutting through lanes and whizzing by. It's a move called lane-splitting, and while it's potentially dangerous, it's perfectly legal.
