NATIONAL CITY (CNS) - A 29-year-old semi truck driver died of unknown causes at a hospital following a chain-reaction crash involving three other vehicles on Interstate 805 in National City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the 2005 Kenworth combination truck tractor suffered an unknown medical condition and became unconscious in the vehicle, which was stopped in a northbound freeway lane near Sweetwater Road shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday, according to CHP officer Tommy Doerr.

A 2008 Ford Ranger driven by a 31-year-old San Diego woman slid sideways into the back of the semi truck, then spun out across two lanes and was struck broadside by a 2011 Volkswagen, which was in turn rear-ended by 1999 Toyota Tacoma, Doerr said.

The big rig's driver was taken to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Doerr said. The cause of his death was unknown, pending a county Medical Examiner's Office investigation, he said.

His name was not immediately released, but the CHP said he was a Tijuana resident.

The Ford's driver sustained major injuries and was also hospitalized, Doerr said.

The other vehicle occupants, a 21-year-old Bonita man and a 40-year-old La Puente man, were uninjured, Doerr said.
