SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Red Cross is helping some City Heights residents find a temporary place to stay after a fire ripped through their apartment.

It happened just after 1 a.m. Saturday in the 4500 block of Polk Avenue.

San Diego firefighters from Station 17, which serves City Heights, were quickly alerted about the fire.

"We were being dispatched, but we were also being awakened by one of the neighbor... Who was banging on the door, saying there was a fire on Polk Avenue. We got here. We saw smoke and we saw fire coming out of the second floor window. We attacked the fire and got a quick knockdown."

One resident was treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
