County launches new resource page for released inmates

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities in San Diego Tuesday launched what they called a groundbreaking web page intended to ease the re-entry of ex-cons into society.

The Post-Incarceration Re-Entry Resources website guides users to mental health services, family counseling and food programs.

The website -- produced in collaboration with 2-1-1 San Diego -- contains a resource directory called HOPE (Helping Others Pursue Excellence).

"This page is an important resource for those being released from custody as they work toward becoming sober, productive, law abiding members of our community," said District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. "Former inmates and their families can now locate all of these resources in one place, helping them stabilize their lives and not reoffend.

"The changes to the criminal justice system and threat to public safety brought on by prisoner realignment make this new web page an important piece of the puzzle as we work to reduce recidivism," she said.

In 2009, Supervisor Ron Roberts reviewed a Rand Corporation report in which San Diego County was identified as being significantly impacted by re-entry, especially in the areas of communicable diseases. chronic diseases, substance dependency and mental health.

"Service providers, churches and community groups told us they needed this resource to help connect ex-offenders and their families to public health, medical and other services," Roberts said.

2-1-1 San Diego serves the entire population of the San Diego region, connecting people with community, health and disaster services through a free, 24/7 stigma-free phone service and searchable online database.

"Our mission at 2-1-1 San Diego is to connect people to the services they need, no matter what their background is or where they've come from," said 2-1-1 San Diego's Chief Executive Officer John Ohanian. "We are confident that working with our partners at the DA's Office, Sheriff's Office and our re-entry partners, we will be able to do just that through this new website."
