Law enforcement conducts mass-shooting drill

EL CAJON (CNS) - Law enforcement personnel from throughout San Diego County gathered at Grossmont College Tuesday for a drill that will train them to handle a school shooting.

The eight-hour simulation started at 2 p.m. at the campus at 8800 Grossmont College Drive, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

During the drill, officers learned how to track down a shooter, clear rooms, and communicate with each other via radio and hand signals, department spokeswoman Melissa Aquino said. They are also expected to learn how to provide security for paramedics as they rescue victims and come to the aid of wounded officers.

"The drill will involve sounds of gunfire to simulate a situation where a gunman is shooting at people," Aquino said. "Teams of (sheriff's) deputies and (police) officers will make their way through the campus with mock firearms, practicing how they would track down a gunman. After neutralizing the threat, deputies will check the classrooms and proceed with evacuation procedures."

Teen volunteers acted as trapped students during the drill, according to Aquino.

"It's a scenario that no one wants to think about, but law enforcement is ready to respond in the event a real emergency occurs," she said.
