2 dozen homes still evacuated from Hemet wildfire

HEMET, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire in rural Riverside County is only 10 percent contained after forcing the evacuation of about two dozen homes.

The blaze has burned more than seven square miles as of Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon in the community of Mountain Center between Palm Springs and Hemet.

Homes and an animal sanctuary were evacuated and several structures have burned but authorities don't know whether those are homes or outbuildings.

State fire spokeswoman Julie Hutchinson tells KNX-AM radio that the fire currently is heading east, away from homes and toward the desert.

Meanwhile, U-T San Diego says an 11-square-mile fire in San Diego County was contained Monday after destroying more than 100 mountain cabins. Authorities say human activity sparked the fire near Julian on July 6.
