Crowded county jails could see hundreds of new inmates

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Hundreds of state prisoners could be transferred to San Diego this weekend because of a realignment of the state jail system. But due to an already crowded jail system, there is a chance violent predators could be released from jail altogether.

County supervisors came to a unanimous agreement Tuesday that they would be proactive when it comes to overcrowding in local jails.

This comes in response to Governor Brown's efforts to stop a federal push to release between 400 and 800 new prisoners locally, including those incarcerated for violent and sexual crimes.

San Diego is currently dealing with a spike in weekend incarcerations of between 150 and 200. Officials are considering using video court and weekend court for arraignments to help cut down on those spikes.

County supervisors plan to meet with other agencies in an effort to come up with a solution by December.
