Bridge to Beach event brings inner city kids to beach for fun
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Though it was cloudy at the beach Saturday, there were plenty of bright smiles.
A group of underprivileged kids got the chance to have a day of fun in the in surf and sand, thanks to a joint partnership of people who care.
The children are part of a program called the Barrio Logan College Institute. They started off the day with a beach and bay clean-up to teach volunteerism and community spirit.
After that it was all fun. Boogie boarding, body surfing, swimming, paddle boarding and a picnic -- activities that are common at the beach, but not everyone who lives in San Diego gets to do.
"You'd be surprised how many kids actually live in the communities and never been over the Coronado Bridge, much less come out to the beach. So we're trying to fix that with our partners to make that happen," Pedro Villegas of SDG&E said.
