SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A man is in custody after leading the CHP on a dangerous chase that topped out at 120 miles an hour.

Police say the chase started early Tuesday afternoon when the man blew past a CHP cruiser on southbound Interstate 5 near Mission Bay Drive. The driver continued through downtown and onto eastbound State Route 94.

The officer blew a tire and had to back off. But the driver continued on, spinning out on the Massachusetts Avenue off ramp in Lemon Grove.

"He actually fled on foot north under the freeway. He was followed by a couple of witnesses. He tried to hide underneath a car and they pointed him out to one of the sheriff's deputies that was on the way over," explained Sgt. Steven Toth with the CHP.

The driver was taken to a hospital to be checked out for injuries he suffered in the crash.
