Filner's invite to speak at rape survivors' event revoked

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – The National Women Veterans Association of America was set to have Mayor Filner speak at a fundraising event for victims of sexual assault in the military. That invitation was withdrawn during a Wednesday morning news conference.

Tara Jones addressed the sexual harassment allegations facing Mayor Bob Filner Wednesday morning. This news conference follows Monday's announcement from the first woman, Irene McCormack Jackson, to publicly step forward with sexual harassment complaints regarding Filner.

"After much careful thought and consideration, my board and I have determined and decided that Mayor Bob Filner will be removed as guest speaker on the topic of military sexual assault, sexual harassment and violence against women and children," Jones told reporters.

The NWVAA was set to present Filner with a "Lifetime Achievement Recognition Award" at their benefit gala next month. After the allegations against Filner surfaced, the group withdrew the award and instead provided Filner with the opportunity to be the Keynote Speaker and address the allegations. That invitation has now been revoked.

Filner was the leading Democrat on the House Veterans Committee when he was in Congress.

Jackson, 57, said that during her approximately six months of employment in the mayor's office, Filner held her in a headlock while demanding kisses. She also alleged the mayor told her she should work without her panties on, that he wanted to see her naked, that he could not wait to consummate their relationship, and that he wanted to marry her.

On Tuesday, a former campaign staffer told KPBS that Filner patted her bottom at a 2005 fundraising event, when he was a congressman. Laura Fink said she demanded an apology from Filner in an email, and received a mumbled "I'm sorry" a couple of days later.

In another development, reported Wednesday that an unidentified woman has lodged a complaint with the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing, claiming she was sexually harassed by Filner.
