UCSD students construct "bottle bench" along San Diego River

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Students from UC San Diego are bringing a unique environmental message to the San Diego River in Mission Valley.

The students teamed up with the San Diego River Park Foundation to create a "bottle brick bench."

The students used plastic bottles filled with non-recyclable trash as supportive "bricks," then bonded them together with natural materials like sand, clay, mud and hay.

"The bench is to show people how you can use that waste in a different way and actually create something useful out of the waste," said UCSD student Melanie De Shadarevian.

Students say the bench took about a year to create from design to completion.
