Trailer stash

As any tourist can tell you, San Diego can be an expensive place to visit. But if you're looking to vacation on the cheap, there's a solution that has some affordable vintage accommodations.

It's called glamping, glamour camping, and when it comes to minimalist accommodations to stretch your travel budget to the max, Helene Cornell is the trailer queen.

"So I have two of these canned hams in South Park and an Airstream in OB," said Cornell with Urban Holiday Rentals.

All of which she rents out for prices that start around $50 to $60 dollars a night.

"When people come to visit us, we really want them to explore the community, explore some of our local businesses and get a feel for the San Diego lifestyle," continued Cornell.

The love den, neatly tucked away on Juniper Street in trendy South Park sleeps two.

"It's 1958 Dalton," Cornell added. "I've totally dialed in the inside. I do all the renovation and customized it myself. I did all the drapery and custom furniture myself. There's a TV in there. There's hardwood floors."

The cozy and campy, Moroccan flavored love den is a popular destination. And Cornell says she is already booked into next year.

This "canned ham" also comes with adjacent accoutrements, such as a little fridge and a bathroom shower.

Now if you'd rather gamp closer to the coast, the Bonsai Beach Bubble is your destination.

"This is an Airstream. It's a little bit bigger than the other trailer," explained Cornell. "When I bought this one, it was just a shell. We put in floors and wall and we came up with this kind of minimalist Zen den. It's about three blocks away from the beach and it comes with bicycles, surf boards, boogie boards, all the beach toys that you need."

For the trailer queen, who turned "canned ham" into "glam," there is rejoicing in this rejuvenation.

"It just makes me so happy to greet these families and know that I'm giving them such a fun and unique experience and they are always so grateful," added Cornell.

A trailer made success story.
