Qualifying for La Costa Professional Tennis Tournament to conclude

CARLSBAD (CNS) - Singles qualifying play for the $795,707 Southern California Open women's tennis tournament at La Costa Resort and Spa will conclude Sunday with the four second-round winners receiving spots in the 28-player main draw.

Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, the top seed in the qualifying draw, will face American Jan Abaza. On Saturday, Erakovic defeated Zoe Scandalis, a San Diego native who will be a junior this fall at USC, 6-2, 6-0, while Abaza was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Emily Harman of Petersburg, West Virginia.

Other winners Saturday included San Diegan Alexandra Stevenson, a 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist; Nicole Gibbs, the 2012 and 2013 NCAA women's singles champion; Coco Vandeweghe, who reached the final of the 2012 Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, and Asia Muhammad, the older sister of Shabazz Muhammad, who was chosen by the Utah Jazz in the June NBA Draft, then traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves after playing one season at UCLA.

Stevenson defeated Gabrielle Desimone, 6-3, 6-2. Gibbs, a Santa Monica resident, defeated Brianna Morgan, 6-2, 6-0. Vandeweghe, a niece of former NBA player and executive Kiki Vandeweghe, defeated Stephanie Hoffpauir, 6-2, 6-3. Muhammad defeated Alicja Rosolska of Poland, 6-2, 6-2.

Stevenson will face Italian Maria Elena Camerin. Gibbs will face fellow American Julia Boserup. Vandeweghe will oppose Petra Rampre of Slovakia. Muhammad will face the winner of the first-round match between American Raquel Kops-Jones and Sachie Ishizu of Japan.

Main draw play is due to begin on Monday.
