Navy vet struck, killed in skateboarding accident

A car struck and killed a skateboarder on a Pacific Beach thoroughfare Monday, authorities said.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A skateboarder who was struck and killed by a car in a busy Pacific Beach intersection was a young Navy veteran, according to friends.

The collision happened about 5:45 p.m. Monday on Garnet Avenue near Lamont Street, according to a San Diego police spokesman.

Friends identified the skateboarder as Wilhem Oben, 24, a Navy veteran who was recently a sailor aboard the USS Ronald Reagan.

Police say the rider was speeding down a hill on Lamont Street and could not stop before entering the intersection at Garnet.

He was hit by a Jeep Cherokee traveling westbound on Garnet and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver stopped, had the right of way, and will not be cited, according to police.

Police say a toxicology test will be conducted during the autopsy to see if the victim was under the influence at the time of the accident.
