Officials ID boy killed in church golf cart accident

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday released the name of a 4-year-old boy fatally struck by a runaway electric cart outside an Escondido church.

Santiago Zarate of Escondido was playing with his older brother and another boy near the utility vehicle in front of a parish hall at the Church of the Resurrection on Conway Drive when it lurched forward and pinned him against a concrete pillar about 6:45 p.m. Monday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

His parents freed Santiago with help from several other adults, then drove him to the city's police and fire department headquarters, traffic Lt. Tom Albergo said. From there, medics airlifted the boy to Rady Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 8:15 p.m., the county Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Witnesses told investigators that the three boys' mothers had just admonished them to stay out of the golf-style cart when the accident occurred, according to Albergo.

"Being kids, (they were) probably bouncing around or whatever," the lieutenant said.

During their play, one of the youngsters apparently stepped on the accelerator without realizing what would happen, Albergo said.

It was unclear if the church staff had intended to leave the ignition key in the unattended cart, according to police.

No criminal charges were expected in the case, Albergo said.
