New documents reveal ugly war of words at City Hall

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The disdain between Mayor Bob Filner and City Attorney Jan Goldsmith has been well documented, but News 8 has learned a heated battle is also raging between the two top officials from both offices.

Several letters filled with back-and-forth accusations are bringing into question the professionalism of both offices.

The letters and internal emails obtained by News 8 show several heated exchanges between Mayor Filner's office and City Attorney Jan Goldsmith's office, specifically between the mayor's chief of staff Lee Burdick and Chief Deputy City Attorney Joe Cordileone.

The correspondence began last Thursday, when Goldsmith's office tells Burdick to "immediately provide to (Cordileone) handwritten notes" related to the alleged misconduct and/or sexual harassment by Mayor Filner."

Burdick, who is an attorney, fires back with a letter of her own, writing "cease threatening me and harassing me in the performance of my duties to the city… threats and now daily harassment I am receiving in my job," and "I am by law allowed to serve as a legal adviser to the mayor… which prohibits me from revealing to anyone confidential legal advice."

Joe Cordileone responds by writing, "your letter is an embarrassment… you keep telling everyone that you are the mayor's lawyer… your letter demonstrates that, quite simply, you do not know what you are talking about…"

The battle then continues over a subpoena delivered by the city attorney's office to Mayor Filner after a SANDAG meeting. Burdick accuses the city attorney of serving "the mayor at a public event for the sole and obvious purpose of trying to humiliate him… the city attorney is using this litigation to advance his personal agenda against the mayor."

Cordileone responds, "you are flat wrong… don't count on getting work as a mind reader in a carnival sideshow. You have no talent in that regard. You cannot possibly know the city attorney's reason for doing anything. You look foolish when you profess to know his thoughts… even if you were right about being the mayor's lawyer (and you are just plain wrong) you are not the city's lawyer. Worse, everything I have seen from you proves that you give bad advice."
