Passenger killed, driver arrested in SR-94 crash

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A passenger was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 94 and the driver was jailed on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving, the California Highway Patrol said Saturday.

The suspected drunken driver of a Volvo 850 sedan was headed west on the highway west of state Route 15 at a high rate of speed about 10:50 p.m. Friday, when he made an unsafe maneuver to the right and struck the curb and two trees along the freeway, a CHP dispatcher said.

The car's restrained passenger, a 60-year-old San Diego man, sustained fatal injuries in the crash and died at the scene, according to the CHP and the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Medical Examiner's Office personnel withheld his name pending family notification.

The driver was arrested following the crash on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence resulting in injury or death, the dispatcher said. His name was not immediately released.

Traffic was temporarily diverted from the westbound 94 to southbound Route 15 following the crash and the westbound 94 transitions from Route 15 were shut down, the CHP reported.

All of the roads were reopened by 3 a.m., according to the CHP.
