SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The speaker of the California Assembly says he doesn't understand why San Diego Mayor Bob Filner has not yet resigned amid mounting allegations of sexual harassment.
Democratic Assembly Speaker John Perez told reporters Monday that the allegations from 10 women describing years of groping and other alleged inappropriate behavior have "incapacitated" Filner as mayor.
The first-term Democratic mayor and former congressman said he would begin two weeks of intensive therapy Monday. He faces a lawsuit from his former communications director and growing calls for his resignation.
Perez, of Los Angeles, says Filner's resignation would be a faster and more favorable resolution than a recall election.
Perez also criticized comments by Filner's attorney, who said the city should cover his legal costs because he was not given sexual harassment training.
