Brush fire burns 3 acres near wildlife refuge

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A fire of unknown origin blackened about three open, grassy acres Monday in a field near Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.

The non-injury blaze erupted shortly before 3 p.m. alongside Bay Boulevard, south of E Street in Chula Vista, according to fire department officials.

It took ground crews about 40 minutes to get the flames under control, city Deputy Fire Chief Jim Garcia said.

The blaze, which posed no structural threats, forced the closure of traffic lanes in the immediate area, Garcia said.

The cause was under investigation.
