Cell phone Amber Alert system used for first time

Posted: Updated:

(CBS 8) - For the first time, officials used a cell phone Amber Alert system to alert Californians about two missing San Diego children.

Some phones received more than one alert via text message, others by beeper.

It's part of the wireless emergency alert plan that went into effect in January. Cell phone users get the messages automatically based on their proximity to the situation.

You can opt out of the alerts by changing the alert settings on your phone.
