Marti Emerald explains why she flipped on Filner

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - As Mayor Bob Filner is expected to complete a behavioral therapy program Saturday we are hearing from one of his last two supporters who are now calling for his resignation.

Councilwoman Marti Emerald spoke to News 8 Saturday about why she decided to join her colleagues in calling for Filner to step down.

Mayor Filner seemingly has fewer and fewer supporters by the day and now he has lost the entire city council.

As for the locks on his office -- his chief of staff Lee Burdick told the Voice of San Diego that the locks were changed to protect documents in his office.

The mayor is not being locked out - according to her - and it's a precautionary measure to protect potential evidence.

Meanwhile councilmember Marti Emerald explains why she had to make what she calls a tough decision.

"With all the new...for him to resign," she said.

Saturday, councilwoman Marti Emerald gave a little more insight into why she and councilwoman Myrtle Cole joined the rest of the council in calling for Mayor Bob Filner to resign.

Before demanding his resignation yesterday - Emerald last addressed the issue at a July 30 council meeting.

She sympathized with the then-eight women who had come forward to accuse Filner of unwanted advances or sexual harassment.

"But I do know it is my place, as an elected woman and as a community leader to stand up and speak out on behalf of those who have been harmed and stand with them," she said.

But by Friday she changed her tone as 14 women have now accused the mayor of behaving inappropriately.

"And it was a very very... lead our city again," she said.

At that same July 30 council meeting several public comments about Mayor Filner turned into attacks against Emerald and Cole for not demanding a resignation.

"If anything happens to any other woman going forward with Mayor Filner... Then it's on your heads..."

Filner is expected to return to office on August 19 - according to his attorneys.

Going forward - Emerald's comments in the past give a glimpse into how she hopes the mayor carries himself in the future.

Emerald and Cole hope the mayor resigns immediately.

Although he's shown no indication of doing that.
