Endangered mouse species being bred at San Diego Zoo

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - History is being made at the San Diego Zoo.

For the first time ever, a critically endangered mouse species is being bred in captivity. So far, a total of 12 mice have been born during this inaugural breeding season.

The Pacific pocket mouse was believed to have gone extinct in the 1980s. It was rediscovered in 1993.

Now the mice exist at just three sites along the California coast.
