Commuters being warned of I-805 closure

Los Angeles' "Carmageddon" is coming to San Diego, but this time the South Bay version is being called "DARmageddon."

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Los Angeles' "Carmageddon" is coming to San Diego, but this time the South Bay version is being called "DARmageddon."

Interstate 805 will be closed in both directions between the 905 and state Route 54, from 3 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.

During the shutdown, crews will demolish the East Palomar Street bridge to make way for a direct access ramp.

Also, the so-called DAR connector eventually will provide convenient access to a planned transit station in the area, according to the state transportation agency.

"This is what the future of San Diego is... It's express lanes, its providing more choices and more reliability," said Laurie Berman, Caltrans.

Travel delays are expected.

The toll road, state Route 125, will be free during the construction period.

Although traffic delays are expected, local residents say the end result will be worth it.

"A lot has changed of course over the years, and the 805 freeway has become so congested," said resident Tim Gonzalez. "I think this will be a good thing for the area."
