Recall signature drive kicks off Sunday

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The effort to recall embattled San Diego Mayor Bob Filner kicks off its signature gathering drive on Sunday.

Organizers say they will have a volunteer presence at major events, as well as at a training session in the afternoon. More than 800 San Diegans have signed up as volunteers to collect signatures or manage other aspects of the effort to recall Filner.

Organizers say the recall now has area directors for 18 geographic regions within the city.

"They're people who know what's going on in their communities, and what they're going to do is they're going to recruit more volunteers and sort of manage them and help them, make sure they know what's going on," Recall Bob Filner spokeswoman Rachel Laing said.

A series of Sunday events begin with an official volunteer kickoff in Mission Valley at the Town and Country Hotel's Pacific Ballroom from from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It's designed for volunteers who want to pick up petitions or play a leadership role within their neighborhoods.

At 2 p.m. there will be a "Freedom from Filner March and Rally," put together by bi-partisan businesswomen and women veterans. Attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing several of the women who have come forward with allegations of unwanted advances by the mayor, will be there. Recall Bob Filner volunteers armed with petitions will also attend.

At the America's Finest City Half-Marathon in Balboa Park's Pan American Plaza, volunteers will be circulating petitions at the finish line.

"That's where a lot of people are gathering, it's a big civic event… I think it'll be a good place to remind people that we want to bring good leadership back to our city," Laing said.

On the Recall Bob Filner website, there will be updates on events, progress reports and other information, as well as a real-time mapping function that will show where San Diegans can go to sign a recall petition.

Starting on Sunday, a PDF petition will be available for download with instructions for gathering signatures and returning it to headquarters.

"I think Bob Filner is underestimating the extreme anger of women, of the way that he's treated them. San Diegans are disappointed and disgusted and they're dying to sign this thing. I've got to tell you, if you don't think you can get 101,000 people to come out and sign (the petition), you're wrong," Laing said.
