LAKESIDE (CBS 8) - Firefighters stopped a freeway-side brush fire at about 10-acres on the southern side of Interstate 8 outside of El Cajon Saturday, but not before it threatened residences and snarled freeway traffic, authorities said.
The fire on I-8 near Los Coches Road was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m., according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler. No injuries were reported.
The fire briefly threatened homes on Lotus Lane and La Cresta Road before it was stopped, according to Cal Fire officials.
"I was watching TV down in my house and my neighbor rang my door and said you might wanna come into your back yard," resident Craig Dindinger said. "We started the hoses, watered down the property, and within 10 minutes the fire department was here."
Crews were able to surround the fire pretty quickly, but the wind kept feeding the flames.
"With that we dispatched the resources in the appropriate positions, along with the air craft and dozers to make sure we handled all those issues," said Larry Converse, Cal Fire.
Not only were homes threatened, but so were the businesses that sat at the base of a mountain covered in flames.
"Without all the helicopters and air support all these stores would have burned," Andy Collins said.
Crews were able to keep the fire under 10 acres. In these conditions, that's quite an accomplishment.
"Keeping something under 10 acres with this heat and these conditions right here was very good," Converse said.
Eastbound freeway traffic was also backed up to Greenfield Drive in El Cajon, and westbound traffic to Los Coches Road in the unincorporated Lakeside area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
