Fire at pet store in Hillcrest might be arson

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire that damaged a pet-supply store in Hillcrest Monday is being investigated as arson.

Flames began spreading through the building in the 1200 block of University Avenue about 1:30 p.m., and it took firefighters about 25 minutes to put out the fire, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Witnesses called 911 after seeing a man setting fire to cardboard on a porch behind the store.

"He was putting more cardboard on top of it, pushing it right onto the edge of the building and smoke started coming up and I said, 'hey, you're catching the building on fire' and he said 'I'll go get some water' and he ran into the building and I didn't see him again," wintess Bill Norville said.

The fire spread up the rear wall of the shop and into the attic before crews were able to put it out.

No live pets are sold at the store. No injuries were reported.
