Repairs underway on broken water main in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Repair crews restored water service and reopened streets Wednesday in neighborhoods disrupted by two pipeline failures that struck in quick succession -- first in Hillcrest, and then in North Park.

The first of the two infrastructure breakdowns occurred about 3 p.m. Tuesday, when a 20-inch-diameter water main ruptured underneath the 3600 block of Fifth Avenue near Balboa Park, flooding the north-south thoroughfare and some adjacent commercial buildings.

Less than an hour later, a 16-inch pipeline gave out below Oregon Street at Meade Avenue, according to the San Diego Water Department.

City public-utilities personnel got the larger main fixed and water service restored to the dozens of affected homes and businesses in the area by about 3 this morning, hours sooner than initially anticipated, SDWD spokesman Arian Collins said. The excavated boulevard was patched and open again roughly seven hours later, he said.

The 16 addresses affected by the second pipeline failure were back in service as of 9:30 a.m., and repairs to the roadway at the intersection were complete about two hour later, according to Collins.
