CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) - The South Bay is about to get a new community with 80 new city blocks and thousands of homes.
It will be known as Millenia, a master planned community with retail and office space and public parks.
McMillin Communities' broke ground on the 20-year master plan community Thursday morning.
Chula Vista City leaders say in the next 30 years, they expect their region to grow in population by 100,000 people, and about 10 percent of the new residents could live at Millenia.
Millenia will be built at the southeast corner of Birch Road and state Route 125, immediately south of Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista.
City leaders say Millenia is a multi-billion-dollar development that will sit in the heart and epicenter of the emerging San Diego/Tijuana mega region.
The new 210-acre project will stretch the equivalent of 80 city blocks. Three-thousand homes, apartments and condos will be built as part of the next chapter in the 24-thousand acre Otay Ranch Master Plan.
The community will include 3 million square feet of commercial space. Millenia also has plans for a new elementary school, a library, six parks and miles of bike paths.
Chula Vista leaders say 20 years from now, 8,000 people are expected to call Milenia home. They predict the the new community could potentially create 9,000 jobs.
The first condos and apartments will be move-in ready in late 2014.
